Knowyou have small eyes watehingyou Students & some parents begin new sehool year at Earl Bradsher Presehool BYGREYPENIECOSI COURIER-TIMES STAEE WRITER greypentecost@toxboro-courier.tom Earl Bradsher Preschool started off its school year Tuesday, and by all reports opening day went well for both students and the group of parents participating in the ACE (Adults and Chil dren in Education)/GED pro gram at the school. Because the state’s pre kindergarten program is now under the Division of Child Development, the routine is a little different at Earl Brad sher this year. In preparation for a required swipe-card sys tem for parents, the school is having parents or guardians come into the school building to drop off and pick up stu dents. Under the old system, parents would drop students off to waiting staff in front of the school building. Now, students are to ar rive between 8:15 a.m. and 9 a.m, and depart between 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. See OPENING, Page 10 GREY PENTECOST I COURIER-TIMES Earl Bradsher Preschool student Jocelyn Brown peers into the fish tank as her aunt, Saleda Bolton, waits to take her home. School board to consider driver education bids Possible donation of former Helena sehool building to PCC also on agenda BY GREY PENTECOST COURIER-TIMES STAEE WRITER greypentecost@roxboro-coutiet.com Driver’s education bids and a new board policy concerning concussion and head injuries are on the action agenda for Thursday’s meeting of the Person County Board of Education. The meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. in the board of education boardroom, located on the ground floor of the Per son County Office Building at 304 S. Morgan St. in Roxboro. The board voted to outsource the driver’s education program in May, and the bidding process was closed in July. 'The submitted bids were brought before the board during its August meeting, but the board requested that each bidder answer a uniform list of questions before it made a decision. The information has been submitted by the bidders as requested, and the board will take another look at the matter Thursday. The new state-required policy up for approval on concussion and head injuries involves schools having ven ue-specific plans of action to handle cases where someone has sustained a head injury or is showing signs of a concussion. Also during the meeting. Person County Schools Executive Director for Program Services Marionette Jeffers will present the 2011-12 Achieve3000 Reading Program contract to the board for approval. In its third year of implementation at PCS, Achieve3000 is a web-based literacy program designed to improve reading comprehension, fluency, vo cabulary and writing skills. The pro gram is being used to enhance regular classroom instruction in every PCS elementary school in second- through fifth-grades. Finance Officer Julie Masten will present the 2011-12 budget resolu tion, and a financial report for July 1 through Aug. 31. An informal request by the Person Board of County Commissioners to donate the old Helena school build ing to the county for use by Piedmont Community College will be up for dis cussion at Thursday’s meeting. A capital projects update and 10“' day enrollment report are also on the discussion agenda. Person High sophomore to ereet Korean War memorial as part of Eagle Seout projeet BY IIM CHANDLER COURIER-TIMES EDITOR tchnntller@roxboro-touriet.com I rights reserved “I want it to be the Remem bered War.” Adam Moore, 16, a sophomore at Person High School, spoke those words recently while dis cussing his decision to erect a Korean War monument at the Person County Courthouse as part of his Eagle Scout project. The Korean War, Moore re cently told the Person Board of County Commissioners, is often referred to as the Forgotten War. That, along with the fact that he has relatives who served in the Korean War, inspired Moore to erect the Korean War monument, which will be located on the lawn of the Person County Court house, facing Abbitt Street. The location will be on the opposite side of the lawn from the coun ty’s World War II monument. “I want [the Korean War veter ans] to have something in Person County that recognizes them,” Moore said. Moore recently told the Rox boro Rotary Club that he was seeking donations to cover the monument’s approximately $8,000 price tag. The monument, Moore ex plained, will be eight inches thick, 36 inches wide, 60 inches tall and will have a base that is 18 inches wide, 48 inches long and eight inches thick.
